Experts reveal Imported frozen Poultry can Kill

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has warned that consumption of imported frozen poultry products may lead to cancer, kidney diseases and hypertension.

Unfortunately, the warning has not deterred many Nigerians from consuming them. According to a former NAFDAC Director-General, Dr Paul Orhii, the risk in the products comes as a result of substances that can predispose one to kidney, liver and lung diseases as well as certain types of cancer and drug resistant bacterial infections among others.

Medical experts believe that consumption of the products can be a silent-killer because they may not show symptoms before attacking. Apart from the health implications of the products, the importation also impedes local poultry production as farmers have to contend with low market demand. Findings have shown that about 50 million Nigerians eat imported chicken, turkey and fishes almost on a daily basis.

According to a veterinary expert, Dr. Tito Adebanjo, the use of formalin, a chemical used to embalm corpses and other dangerous substances, to preserve the poultry products, is a cancer-causing

Social Media And The English Language By Reuben Abati

An article written by Reuben Ababti.
I get confused these days reading many of the posts on social media, and text messages sent through cell phones, because of the kind of new English that young people now write. The English language is without doubt quite dynamic. In the last 200 years, it has lent itself to many innovations, as cultural, religious, and situational codes have transformed the language and extended the dictionary, with new words and idioms.
The kind of new English being written by twitter and what’s app users, particularly young people is however so frightening and lamentable, because it is beginning to creep into regular writing. Texting and tweeting is producing a generation of users of English, (it is worse that they are using English as a second language), who cannot write grammatically successful sentences. I was privileged to go through some applications that some young graduates submitted for job openings recently and I was scared.

Another Chevron pipeline blown yesterday

Combat ready troops, yesterday, swooped on Oporoza, the traditional headquarters of Gbaramatu kingdom and hometown of wanted ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo).
The action, the second of its kind in the last one week, comes barely 24 hours after another Chevron facility was bombed at Makaraba fields, in Warri South West council, Delta State.
The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), the shadowy militants group, which has claimed responsibility for previous pipeline explosions, has made no comments yet. Military authorities, however, say the attack bears the hallmark of the group.
About 30 soldiers armed to the teeth arrived in four gunboats and combed the community for hours. To the elders who summoned courage to ask questions, the soldiers said they had come in search of the militants who blew up the Chevron facilities.

"The Fuel Pricing Debate: Our Story" - By Prof Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), Vice President

Fellow citizens,

I have read the various observations about the fuel pricing regime and the attendant issues generated. All certainly have strong points.

The most important issue of course is how to shield the poor from the worst effects of the policy . I will hopefully address that in another note.

Permit me an explanation of the policy. First, the real issue is not a removal of subsidy. At $40 a barrel there isn't much of a subsidy to remove. In any event the President is probably one of the most convinced pro-subsidy advocates.

What happened is as follows: our local consumption of fuel is almost entirely imported. The NNPC exchanges crude from its joint venture share to provide about 50% of local fuel consumption. The

Blast hits Chevron facility again in Delta

Pipeline-ExplosionAnother explosion rocked a Chevron oil pipeline in Delta State yesterday, the second at a facility of the United States firm in the last one week.
The explosion is likely to further worsen Nigeria’s crude supplies to the refineries.
There have been renewed militant activities, particularly against oil facilities, in recent times and this has reduced Nigeria’s output by 300,000 barrels per day and closed a major export port.
Last week, militants calling themselves the Niger Delta Avengers claimed responsibility for an attack
