After learning that at least two of the 31 people killed in the Brussels attacks were American, President Obama has reached out to the family of Justin and Stephanie Shutls.
On Sunday, the president called the family, offering his condolences, adding "Justin and Stephanie epitomized all that was good about America," and telling their parents that "their tragic deaths have touched the hearts of all of us," a White House official said in a statement to PEOPLE.
The married couple, who lived in Brussels, were confirmed dead on Saturday.
"[Shults] will be remembered by his CLARCOR community as an intelligent, kind and loyal friend and employee," a statement on Justin's employer CLARCOR's website read. "Justin will be greatly missed by those who knew him."
The three explosions in Brussels occurred last Tuesday when bombs went off in three separate locations across the city including one at the Brussels Zaventem Airport, one at the Maalbeek Metro Station and another at a metro station near the European Union headquarters.
ISIS later claimed responsibility for the attack.
"Our country has been hit by blind, violent and cowardly bombings," Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said following the attacks,
After the incident, the terror alert for Belgium was upped to level four,according to the U.S. State Department.
